Ok, here's the highlights of my past 2 days.
I found out Friday morning that my building is for sale again This will be the 3rd owner since I moved in in December and still no repairs have been done, we have no fucking heat, I'm not gonna freeze again this winter, I'm moving out December 1st. My neighbourhood is being totally gentrified and since the Drake Hotel opened almost next door we've been bombarded by hipsters in white belts, boxing shoes and trucker hats.
I wasn't scheduled to work Friday but was called in cuz someone came in to see me. It was a man I met the day before, he lives under a bridge by the river, we cashed a cheque for him and he wanted his money so I went to give it to him. He explained to me that this was his only income, a GST (tax rebate) cheque for $54 every 3 months. He used to collect disability but was cut off and declared deceased because he had stopped picking up his cheques from the office because he couldn't afford to travel all the way there. I am now determined to get him back on the system, with a formal apology and paid retroactively for the 3 years of cheques he is entitled to. Those fuckers just declared him dead without even consulting with anyone
We prepared a meal for the kids under the Spadina bridge in my kitchen yesterday so my early evening was spent in a hot kitchen stirring 4 pots of vegie chili. Needless to say I hit the beerstore next. There weren't many people home when we arrived but people trickled through throughout the night. It was cool to just hangout and drink beer and I am building a stronger connection between OCAP and the west end street community, OCAP had mainly done work in the east end before I joined and started organizing. Afterwards I went to a bar with some people from OCAP and these student activist types, I didn't stay long and left the students with the bill. SUCKERS
The crack that's going around is making people completely fucking paranoid. Things are totally tense and are only going to get worse.
Caribana is this weekend (huge Carribean festival), I'd like to go check it out but I really hate crowds, and yuppies, and tourists...
