I got the sweetest ever 'fan mail' the other day. A retired English Literature professor (and a really talented writer) contacted me through a poetry website where I post, after reading my debut novel, Anhedonia. He gave me some of the most effusive and encouraging feedback I've ever had which - given his own formidable writing skills and his breadth of reading - has really helped reaffirm my will to keep at it with this whole writerly thing.
I must admit, I had been struggling a bit in the face of the seeming impenetrability of the book market, and I was starting to wonder if I've just been wasting my time. This out-of-nowhere contact with its message of empathy and support was just what I needed to help me keep the faith.
