The day that will live in infamy. December 07, 1941 --- December 07, 2011---- got me thinking about some stuff....
Yesterday, I opened a keep sake box and I found the brass cartridges from the three-volley salute, at his military funeral.
Today at lunch, is when it dawned on me what the day was. I was listening to Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms" and thinking while eating of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen that I have served with in my career in the US Army. Thinking of those who have come before, during, and after. These people I may never know but I care for them and their families.
I was able to visit Iwo Jima while I was stationed in Japan. After that trip, where I was able to walk on those black sand beaches, I had a new found respect for the men who were in battle on that little island in the Pacific. I really need to scan the pictures I have from Iwo Jima.
The other day at work I met a Soldier that has been in many battles and deployments, he started after Viet Nam and now because of the brain injuries he suffered during these times, he has brain injuries ( short term memory loss ). After talking to him for a while, I found out his wife left him and he lost his house and now has to keep his dogs at his mothers house until he gets a place of his own.
If you know a service member, send your love to them and their family... not only during the holiday season but all year round.
