Sara and I woke up this morning, thinking it was just a normal august morning. We both exited our bedroom and were having small talk in the living room, when Sara's cognitive skills noticed we had a visitor "hanging" out on our window sill. Sara let out a small yelp, and all I could think was "Fuck. Again!?"
All the cats, but Charlie seemed uninterested in out batty friend. Not taking any chances, we look up the numbers for the Kent County Health Department and I give them a call. Apparently the K.C.H.D. doesn't care about bats unless they are flying around in your bedroom.
At this moment is when my wrangling skills are called back into action. I throw on my "Robe of Bat Protection + 3" (my bathrobe) and a my sleeping bat container (a water pitcher) and with the experience that I have in bat wrangling, I easily scoop the bat into the pitch... er, container and seal it up with and advanced bat sealant (packing tape).
I then call Elsie's vet to see how much vaccinations cost... Yeah... A lot...
Being the good kitty dad, with a tight budget, I set up an appointment for Elsie (since she is a patient at the vet already) and I asked a lot of info about bats and rabies. Luckily, Amanda (the receptionist) was extremely helpful and gave me the state health department's number, so I called them - and they gave me more numbers.
After playing "phone around the rosey", I finally get some info I didn't want to hear - if the bat has rabies, three of our kitties, whom are a tad overdue on their shots may have to either be thrown into quarantine for six months or be put down. Accepting (gravely, albeit - Sara had to talk me into it) the grim possibilities, I take the bat down to the animal shelter, only the hear some promising news - This bat is considers no threat to us or the cats, since it wasn't injured or dead and the K.C.H.D. only considers dead bats in the house with cats a threat, being they are natural predators.
Huzzah!
I make a call back to Elsie's vet and set up appointment for the other three to get poked for their shots as well, too bad it's going to max Sara's credit card out.
When it rains it pours over here at the Morgan/Vohlken clan.
After Nic posted this blog I had a small melt down in the living room. My credit card bill is due on the third, my anti-baby prescription needs refilling in a few days, rent is due on the seventh, I still hadn't purchased Missy's shower gift, my sisters birthday gift or my dad's birthday gift, and I STILL haven't received my severance package from Bombay. After a few minutes of Nic rubbing my hair and the tears drying, we rethought taking the rest of the kids to the vet, and boy am I glad we did.
We canceled all the appointments but Elsie's. When we were quoted the price we were told that each booster for the kitties would be $55 plus $42 for each exam. Elsie, being that she has been there before would not needed to have the physical, just the booster. Well, when we get Elsie to the vet, the doctor puts her on three different meds that we need to give her to stop her stomach problems, plus they gave her some meds there: totaling almost $150. If we would have brought the other three in that would have totaled more than what I have left on my credit card and in my checking account combine.
I love being jobless.
Oh oh, plus if you haven't heard my car has a 4 1/2" to 5" crack in the radiator, which obviously needs to get fixed. That'll be another hundred bucks right there...at least I can be thankful that my daddy is handy with cars so I don't have to pay $400 to take it into a shop.
Did I mention how excited I am for my new job to start? Seriously. The stress can stop now.
I don't like this time of month...all the bills are due, and there are too many birthdays/anniversaries this month!!!
