I got my guitar back from the shop today. It's a Chinese model Squier Strat that's been my workhorse since high school. The nut had worn down under the E string to the point that it was just lying on the neck, buzzing and unplayable. Not to mention that the intonation on the thing had never been set correctly, so it was long overdue for a tune-up.
The folks at Earthshaking Music had planned on adjusting the truss rod, but found that they couldn't without warping the neck (it's a cheap guitar), so that didn't happen. But what with the new nut and the saddles all adjusted correctly for the tuning I play in (CGDGBE), it feels alright even with the slightly higher action past the fifth fret.
Band practice was cancelled today cos of Dennis the Angry Hurricane. But I've got my gear more or less in order...now I just need a speaker cab and I will be set (very professional am I, y'know). Eventually, I'll get to play with the band that I'm in.
