I can't believe it's thirty years ago that John Lennon was gunned down. Although I wasn't really aware of his music (except for some of the more poppy Beatles songs) at the time of his death, he went on to have a huge influence on me and the music I listen to now.
He is such a huge loss to music. If he hadn't died, how would history have changed? In my opinion the music written most recently to his death - songs like (Just Like) Starting Over, Woman, Beautiful Boy and Nobody Told Me - were among the best he'd ever written. If he'd gone on writing and recording to that standard throughout the Eighties he would have, no doubt enjoyed continued success. Would The Beatles ever have reformed? Yes, probably at Live Aid. What would he have thought of Madonna, Bono, Liam Gallagher?
