yeah i can totally understand that being broke part. i just spent $987 dollars yesterday to get my car fixed that put a serious dent in my christmas money... oh well no gifts for anyone year. thankfully i dont have a girlfriend/wife/kids otherwise i would REALLY be in trouble :p and yeah i LOVE the descendents. as a matter of fact i love them so much i got myself a descendents tattoo 
anyways i gotta get back to work. hopefully i'll talk to ya later

perhaps mentioning to him how important it is to you...
and trying as best you can to not guilt...
asking him and bluntly noting how important it is to you to have his support....
adding you how you understand his prior commitments mean a lot to him...
