Ours has been a mixed bag...
The last two days we spent loads of quality time with family; eating, drinking, playing ridiculous games, and that's what it's all about for us really :) Then today we were supposed to be travelling to Nottingham to see one of my favourite bands of all time, HIM, with one of our favourite people in the whole world, @lucerne, but we had to cancel because on Boxing Day our village experienced the worst floods it has had since 1968. Indeed, the entire county, and beyond, has been absolutely devastated by floods.
The floods local to us affected our village and all of our neighbouring villages, towns and cities along the River Calder, which burst its banks on Boxing Day and has ruined countless homes & businesses as a result. On Boxing Day morning Shaun & I watched from our bedroom in horror as the homes across the road from ours were destroyed by rising flood waters. I cannot even begin to describe the damage done or the frankly bizarre sight of firemen canoeing to people's homes to rescue them right outside our house! I cannot imagine how those affected must feel.
Shaun & I have been incredibly lucky; our home is just out of the reach of the flood waters, and we live on the 2nd & 3rd floor so we're high enough up to stay out of harm's way. This morning most of the waters had gone, but the devastation left behind is unlike any caused by previous floods. The clean up effort will be a long & difficult one but people are really coming together; showing selflessness, kindness & compassion.
Here are a few pictures of our village & our neighbouring towns...
