OK, I have an admission to make, one that I have never said among mixed company:
I am a comic-book geek. One that is deep in the closet.
Why in the closet? Well, because comic-book collectors, along with gamers (the pen and paper kind) and maybe anime fans (and a few others I'm forgetting) carry, well, somewhat of a "reputation."
Let's see if I can spit out a few of them:
We're fat
We live in our mom's basement
We have the social skills of a dry noodle
We bathe infrequently
We've never been laid
And, well, because many of us look and act like this:
If you can think of any more stereotypes, or have cool pics of your favorite comic geek, please share!
Plus, saying that you read comics isn't the best way to pick up women.
geek: "Hey baby. I read comics! Isn't that cool?
girl: "OMG that is SO cool! Can I suck your cock?"
Quite simply put, that is not going to ever happen. Ever. Unless she's huge. REALLY huge. And/or is a comic book fan herself (as an aside, women only make up about 10% of the circle, give or take a few percentage points). See above list for reasons why.
Now, I'll be the first to say that while this is true in many cases, it isn't for the most of us. It's just that these geeks above are the ones who dominate the press. And as such, when many of us think "comic book" that's the stereotype that comes up.
Hell, it is for me and I'm part of the culture!
But, in an effort to separate myself from these primates, I've kept my hobby in the closet, and only a few people know about it. None of my students do, a'thank you
Until now.
If you've read this far, you deserve to get some links to what I think some of the better comic-book sites and creators are. I've pretty much graduated past the superhero stage, although I do read one occasionally.
So without further ado, Kevin's cavalcade of comics, with links where applicable:
Thieves and Kings
Bone
Usagi Yojimbo
Y: The Last Man
Fables
Astro City
Astonishing X-Men (I told you there would be one)
Hellboy
The Goon
Just to name a few.
While we're on the subject, there is a teriffic comic convention in the area called HeroesCon that you should stop by if you're in the neighborhood in June. It's a very intimate, cozy con.
Thank yoo for your patronage.

Well, its ok, I still like you. Despite the fact that I never got into comic books at all myself, I do love to read, and can appreciate the fact that you do too!
And yes, I chopped the hairs, but that's not a good picture.
