I've spent way too much time over the past twenty-four hours reading about the story of Constance McMillan, the Mississippi high schooler whose prom was cancelled because she wanted to bring her lesbian girlfriend to the prom with her. The whole thing pisses me off. It reminds me to a certain extent of the crap I had to deal with in high school. I went to an all male Catholic high school, and dealt with near constant harassment because some of the students there wrongly believed I was gay. (Their reasoning was that anyone who didn't enjoy sports or crude / racist jokes had to be homosexual.)
Apparently, McMillan's asshat classmates are making her life miserable because they're ticked they couldn't have their night of booze and making out. (They were really excited that the main prom theme was going to be "Rednecks" by Randy Newman.) Reading about it, one has to wonder why she would want to attend the prom, given that her classmates are such obvious human garbage.
In one news article, a Baptist pastor in the area complained that people in the area were being depicted as hicks, just because they embraced "biblically-centered values." Maybe that's one of the prime symptoms of being a hick, pastor.
