Monday - Day 3
I finally got a full nights sleep last night. So long jetlag ya fuckin pain in the ass.
I woke up this morning and it was snowing flakes the size of volkswagens. So much fresh new powdery snow, but only to find out that it's whiteout conditions (clouds+fog+tons of snow eq zero visibility) on the mountain. Who woulda thought I'd ever say that *too* much snow while snowboarding was a bad thing? There's talk of getting snowshoes, strapping boards on our backs and hiking up some backcountry. Perfect for the luna lounger but I didn't bring it.
Back and allllll sortsa beat up. That snow really was heavy as volkswagens and my little 148 shortie had me riding my back leg all day long. It was good to finally get out, but that was a tough one for our first day of the season. Our attempt at building a decent kicker failed miserably. Then instead of stretching when we got back, we went into the basement, grabbed some skateboards and skated the halfpipe. At first I felt like the prisoner of some horrid animal testing lab as I fell over and over, yet got up and did it again and again and again. After about 30 minutes of pain repeated, I kinda got the hang of it and it's fun as hell. I may just have to turn the shack into a halfpipe. John got some pretty awful video of me during the testing phase. Now I'm laying on my bed nursing my aches and pains. Everyone else is out back building a quarterpipe since it snowed a freakin ton today, but I think my old bones are done. Time for a shower, booze, pain killers, weed, dinner, and booze.
So it's nightfall, I'm sitting at the bar (which has this perma smell of cigarettes and cheese) watching some horrible european snowboard video with a happy hardcore soundtrack, and the crazies here came back with floodlights for a night session on the now completed quarterpipe and fun box. Pizza, beer, and backyard snowboarding. Suddenly I have renewed energy and am actually considering it. Back later with the final update of day 3, provided I don't break anything.
Ok so I didn't strap in. I was tempted but there were just too much showboating for me. I just kicked back at the top of the hill with like 10 other people and spectated. One kid 360d the wall on top of the quarterpipe and tried to come down backside or flip or something, but whatever it was, it led to him landing right on his face. Ouch. The photos came out pretty shitty since it was dark and I was up high, shivering, drinking a beer, but you'll get the idea.
Back at the room now finishing out the night with a book and some music. Conditions tomorrow are supposed to be clearer so we should be on Glacier 3000 in the morning. That first-day-of-riding ache is starting to build up right now so I need the rest to get ready. More snowy swissie stories tomorrow...
