Last weekend I went down to Philly to visit/take care of my grandmother, who recently lost most of her sight. You would never know it, though, to watch her go through her daily routine... Until she tried to cut into the teabag that was on her plate!
Me: "Grandmom, are you on some new herbal diet that includes teabags?!"
GM: "Oh! I was wondering when you became such a lousy cook that you'd make such tough chicken!"
Getting old really sucks. Watching someone you love get old sucks even more. Why does it seem like the "good ones" always go first? My wonderful, amazing paternal grandfather died about 10 years ago, while his bitter crotchety wife lingers on, strong as an ox and getting crabbier every day. My priceless gem of a maternal grandmother is living on borrowed time with a delicate, twice-repaired heart and virtually no vision, while her husband, mostly an absent father (albeit hard-working to support 10 kids) with no time for anything but the track and the pubroom, is happily ensconced in a nursing home, using his Irish wiles to charm his way into the hearts of the staff while fist-fighting (no kidding!) his way through roommates; except for his mind, he's as healthy as a horse! I guess it's just Murphy's Law. I am certainly treasuring every moment with my grandmother, especially now that she can't crochet, which was her favorite pasttime, and can't do crosswords or read, her other favorite pasttimes. She can't even see the TV screen and can't follow the plots of movies or her Lifetime channel programs, which pretty much just leaves listening to music and chatting. The woman has LIVED, let me tell you! She's funny as hell, too. I really should start recording her memories, they'd certainly make for an entertaining book!

So I have been sucked into American Idol again. Tonight is the first elimination of the 24 finalists. Oooh, the excitement!!! (LOL) Seriously, though, have you SEEN Chris and Ace? Yummy!

I'm sorry I've been such a stranger on here. I'm trying to improve my ways.
