Today I asked my mom's advice on how to tell my dad I'm moving to Japan. I was expecting what she said, but I didn't like it. Basically, she thinks I should frame the situation as me doing this for a man. Even though H-- is part of the reason I'm going, and even though I love him and would be very happy if our relationship worked out, I have other reasons for going. I was thinking of going even before we started talking to one another again. Jobs are better there for what I do, it will be an adventure, and I have no serious commitments keeping me here. So, why not go?
It feels as though it is so centrally important to my parents that I get married that nothing else matters. I'm feeling a lot of pressure from my mom about me and H--'s relationship, and I don't want that pressure. I genuinely don't understand where my parents' opinions are coming from.

I'm thinking that her attitude wasn't all that much of a surprise to you. Just nod at her while knowing at the same time that you're an intelligent, and vibrant woman who is a beautiful and fulfilled person with or without a man in your life.
