I got first place in the self defense category, for which I had my friend attack me with a stick.
However, that tournament was disgusting. I started martial arts because I like the "arts" part. Yes, I like to compete from time to time, but what's most important to me is learning a wonderful tradition, developing integrity, and respecting myself and others. Apparently, the people who were representing my school were some of very few people there who cared about those things, and the judging was a mess. I saw knock outs, groin kicks, face contact, people being thrown on their backs on the wood outside of the ring, blood... and all of it was being allowed. I didn't get hurt, but one of my fellows from the dojang got kicked in the groin and thrown head first onto the ground. Thankfully, he was OK, but I would most certainly not do this particular tournament again.
I did learn, however, what my priorities are as a student of Taekwondo. I do not value violence. I value discipline. Just because you can hurt someone does not mean you should. Skill practiced without a sense of responsibility is a sign of a weak character. And it's dangerous.
