This has got to have been one of the most nerve-wracking weeks of my life. Let me explain - only about six years ago, I was still happily working a shift pattern, providing base level support for our company's IT systems - predictable work, reasonable salary, and you could forget about it when you went home. But today, I find myself in a position of having to produce a business case, explaining how we can save at least $20m by 2011 in a virtualization programme. Not just in Britain or Europe, but globally.
For the past three days I have been staring at this cost/benefit breakdown I have to produce, and thinking 'I have absolutely no idea how to do this'. Just a complete blank. Thankfully, I think a very low power lightbulb has just flickered into life, and I may just be able to save my sorry ass by the deadline.
How I have managed to get from one place to the other is completely beyond me. According to others, I never say no when asked to take something on, and I tend to take more risks than most. So I seem to have ended up in this scary position (I must also admit that the pay has not changed that much for the better since I left shifts - but I can't imagine that changing when we're shedding staff left, right and centre). But, Christ, I feel so out of my depth at present.
Oh well, what's the worst that can happen?.........Ah.
