I've been thinking lately of hyphonated last names...never quite saw the point of them, but I'm seeing more and more lately.
My favorite hyphonated last names are the ones in which the husband and wife are clearly of different ethnicities. I work with a woman whose last name is "Rodriguez-MacDougal".
I think that when people get married, instead of taking the mans name or the womans name or whatever, they should just mash their names together. Like if a 'smith' married a 'jones', they should be 'Smones'. It's things like this I think about when I'm stuck in traffic and breathing exhaust fumes.
On a completely unrelated note, I don't think I can ever complain about having bad luck for the rest of my life after hearing the story of Nicholas Berg. Mr. Berg is from West Chester, PA, which is about 15 minutes from where I live so I've been hearing about this guy a lot. Apparently, this guy has a chance encounter with one of the organizers of the 9/11 attacks several years ago, and lets him borrow his laptop. (Back to the "no good deed.." theme again!) This eventually leads him to be questioned by the FBI when the password turns up on said terrorist. It's all a coincidence, but the subject comes up years later when Nicholas is in Iraq and is questioned again. The questioning just happens to cause him to miss his flight out of Iraq. Those extra few days are all it takes for him to be kidnapped and made the subject of a snuff film by some self-righteous jackasses.
Traditionally, I don't believe in luck...but damn.

Btw your concept on name mashing sounds very cool also. Especially if the last names were like Jackson, and Glass.
