Current Mood:
My best friend phoned me earlier this evening with some troubling news. She spent some romantic time with a close friend on the week-end and now fears she may be pregnant. Her confession was very shocking, but not nearly as outrageous as the news that followed. Upon returning to the city, she headed straight to a clinic in the building where she works, and requested a package of morning after pills. She said both the doctor and nurse who served her stared her down in total condemnation, I think utter disgust were her exact words. She walked into the clinic feeling frightened and ashamed, and walked out feeling about 20 times worse. I had to reassure her that the assholes who tended to her had no right to demean her that way. It really sickens me to think that within the province of Ontario, women who seek emergency contraception are still recieved with complete scorn by conservative health-care practitioners who are supposed to be supportive and non-discriminatory, especially when it comes to abortion issues. The morning after pill cannot be purchased over-the-counter in this province YET, and I pray to God that the laws change soon. No woman should ever be made to feel ashamed about her right to choose.
My best friend is one of the most intelligent and responsible people I know. It really hurt me when she said "They made me feel like a whore."
