Pink Like Me
Last May(ish), I decided to move to the city. My reasons were many and varied but one of those reasons was that my six year old had developed something of a complex regarding what she called "dark-skinned people."
(Hey, I specifically didn't teach her "black" and "white" and so forth so I sure as hell wasn't about to correct her rather Victorian terminology)
Anyway, how the worm turns (or something).
She went to the pool at the Glenview Park District on Sunday. She had a blast, of course. She even almost went down the big slide. Next time for sure!
After getting me up to speed on the fun fun fun she paused and added, "but Daddy, why weren't there any 'dark-skinned' people?"
I pretended I didn't know (lousy short-sighted suburban attitudes). I lamely added that not everyone lives everywhere. To which she replied, "that's too bad. I think everyone should live everywhere."
A-fuckin'-men!
