My wife and I starting to get into the whole self-reliance / simple living / do it yourself / preparedness thing. I just have a bad feeling about the way the world is heading. I think a situation on par with the Great Depression will hit us sometime in my life, and I'd like to know how to.. y'know, survive without Wal-Mart, or even steady electricity. Don't depend on being able to "google" it when the need arises. That's what I'm saying. But I'm an eagle scout, did you know that? So the whole "be prepared" thing was basically pounded into my head.
Yesterday she made homemade seitan, which is a meat substitute made from wheat gluten. I like it a lot better than tofu. Tomorrow we're going shopping for stuff to make our own herb garden, and a few emergency preparedness supplies.
I figure, y'know, even if I'm delightfully wrong, we'll save some money and be healthier.

I don't even know how to tie a knot. But I can knit!

I'm forever joking about "when the Apocolypse comes". I probably shouldn't, because I agree with what you're saying. But it helps me feel better about it.
