Inverness, Florida was featured on the Daily Show! Why exactly is that important? Well, Inverness was the town I was born and raised in for eight years. Needless to say I very excited to happen upon this little gem, but it begged the question as to why such a small Floridian town was featured on national television. Was it because of Hurricane Ivan? Nope. How about controversy concerning a certain contested election? Negative. No, Inverness made the press for a much more important reason, and the reason is cooter.
Apparently the word cooter is a synonym for the word turtle and is commonly used as such throughout the South. However, some residents in Inverness were shaken up when they learned that the town would be hosting its first annual Cooter Festival. Many decided to protest the name of the festival because of the word cooter's infamous double meaning. However, the city has decided to ignore these detractors and move forward with the Cooter Festival as planned. I couldn't be more proud of my hometown, but damn do I ever hate that word!
I dedicate this post to Johnny Ramone. R.I.P.
