The Tragus.. part one..
(part two will be noncrusty pics)
I've been wanting my tragii pierced since I was 15. I was working at a salon and I saw it on a hair model; ever since then, I was in love. At 16, I asked my mom if she'd go with me to get them done -- she of course said no to that, so I had to wait. So since then I'd pined for it, and after I turned 18 the only thing stopping me was money. I recently jot a pretty well paying job though, and I knew I had to have it.
A friend of mine called me a few days ago and wanted to hang out today. We were trying to decide what to do and I said I really wanted to get my tragii pierced, and that I'd just gotten paid. I didn't know if that was actually going to happen, but as soon as I got to her house today she asked me where we should go to get them done. I'd never had a "real" piercing before -- just my lobes and two cartilage piercing. I was excited and nervous -- I was finally going to get them done.
I called around, and most placed ranged from $90 to $120 for both. We went to one place in Atlanta, and they asked me if I had eaten in the past four hours. I hadn't, so they told me to eat something and then come back. Well, I went across the street to Waffle House, ate, and 20 minutes later when I went back, they had closed. We went back to her place, and she told me about a place where a few of her friends got some really good tattoos. I was a little nervous -- I knew next to nothing about this place -- but decided to go to the studio. It's in Decatur (near Atlanta), and called Black Cat Tattoo. I walked in the little grey house with a pirate flag outside somewhat nervous, and met my piercer, Dale. He gave me a form to fill out and sign, asked for my ID, and prepared everything while I waited with my friend. I was really nervous, so I went outside for a cigarette. When I came back in, Dale led my friend and I back to his room and asked me to sit on the table. He talked with me and calmed my nerves, explained what he was going to do, what gauge, asked me what kind of jewelry I wanted, and explained to me a good way to breathe. My friend sat across from me and took pictures (flash off) with her digital camera. After he cleaned my ears well and marked off where he was going to pierce the tragus, he had me lay down. He put the clamp over my left ear and told me to take a deep breath... and the needle went through.
It really wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be -- about 5, 10 seconds of pain and it was nearly over. I didn't hear a "pop" like I'd read others had, either. He removed the needle (which let a LOT of pressure off of my ear) and began to insert the jewelry (16g captive hoops). He told me that the when he inserted the ring, it would feel really sore, but I really didn't feel anything at all. He popped the ball in, cleaned my tragus up and let me see it. I loved it! Then he had me lay down on my other side to get the other tragus. I had an adrenaline rush and was thinking, "Oh, that wasn't bad at all, this'll be a piece of cake!" So I was shocked when the second one actually hurt! It took him a little longer to pierce it (by a matter of seconds), but again, it was over really soon and the jewelry was inserted. Again, the jewelry didn't hurt at all. He cleaned the right one up and explained to me how to take care of it. He also told me about how he used to be a boy scout and let me see the hole in his septum.. he was a little weird, but really funny and nice!
We all went up to the register, where he gave me a care sheet and told me once again how to take care of it, and then told me it'd be $70. I gave him that plus a $20 tip, since he did so well on my first real piercing.
And if you want to get yours done, GO FOR IT! It barely hurts -- my two upper cartilage piercings (done with a gun at the mall) hurt tons more than these. They look so good and I'm really proud of myself for going through with it.
