Correct on the hamster character profile. And I'd put most kinds of caged birds in there, too. We don't use "beady eyed" as an insult for humans without precedent. Looking a budgie in the eye gives me the jeebs.

Had a parakeet when I was young that was actually really nice, but diabetes and a couple trips to the pet hospital left him very afraid of humans....
