Alright, so I wouldn't call it research, but I was looking for inspiration on wikipedia of mythological creatures. I'm going to do a sleeve based on the theme of the four elements. I have these greek alchemical symbols on my for-arm, right below the inside of my elbow, closer to my hand than my shoulder (pictures coming soon probably.
The next portion of the sleeve I'm working on is a giant squid, upside down with its head at my wrist, its arms reaching the symbol for water, and its two tentacles wrapping around the sides of earth and air. That is certain. It represents the Kraken/Leviathan, which are both creatures of great power and destruction.
In my search for another creature or two to plant on my arm, I realized I'd totally forgotten the Pheonix. My plan is that its talons will rest slightly above the symbol for fire and its body will rest on the front of my bicep, while its wings will go to each side. Sigh of relief. That is certain also: so far. My only dilemma is that I'd most definitely want the Pheonix to have some color, though maybe not extremely vibrant, a deep red/orange. This would contrast, though, with my original plans for a mostly black and white sleeve.
I'm just not sure how red/orange would do with black and gray. Not just next to it, but if the pheonix was part black/grey part red/orange... Hum? And this tempts me to put color in the Kraken, but I really would like to keep it black and white. We'll see. I am going to talk to my friends artist who as far as I've seen does a good ass job and is also pretty cool I guess. I'm going to see about having him do the Kraken, and then ask for some advice.
