i might as well post this here since it's been on my mind for the past couple days.
i don't know how wide spread it was on the news, but right around the time they yanked terri schiavo's plug, there was an 8 year old girl that was killed here in florida by this asshole that had been arrested multiple times for similar crimes. then about a week ago there was another girl, i want to say she was around 13 or 14 that was just killed and left to rot in a ditch by another asshole that made it out of the judicial system here in florida.
my initial thoughts were those of outrage. it's ridiculous that the state keeps allowing these sorts of things to happen. the lives of women are more important than that and deserve to be better protected.
then i thought about the right's of prisoners and how important they are. they're the cornerstone of a civilized society.
so now i'm wondering, is there a way to balance the two? do i, or does anyone for that matter, have the right to get angry when some bastard finishes his time, gets released, and offs a little girl?
is there a way to balance the two? do i have the right to say, "oh that guy raped a 9 year old girl. shoot him in the back of the skull and let it be over with or he'll get out and do it again."?
but then when someone gets arrested for rape, and he gets released, and this time he takes it a step further and rapes and kills a 9 year old girl, how can i get angry?
questions for discussion:
1. is there really a way to balance the rights of prisoners and the rights of women to be safe?
2. if so, how?
3. if not, why not?
4. if someone has been convicted of multiple violent crimes, does the state have an obligation to keep that person out of society for the rest of their lives?
5. if so, would death or imprisonment be more logical or befitting?
6. what are you views on gun control and how do you think an increase in the number of women who own guns would effect the rate of violence against women?
7. should women rely on the state and it's institutions (i.e. prisons, courts, parole officers, police officers, ect.) for protection, or should women as individuals be more pro-active about self defense? (i.e. carrying weapons and learning martial arts or other forms of physical self defense)
8. do you think the state just has a low regard for the lives and safety of women? or do you think these are just unintentional accidents that are the naturally occuring by-products of the state's judicial system?
i'm going to put this in my zine, so answers would be super helpful, thanks.

4)The death penalty is dumb. The only purpose it serves is revenge, and that isn't something the government should be doing.
5)I think gun control is good. People should certainly be allowed to own guns, but the types of guns that people can buy, and which people are allowed to have them should be pretty strict. Seriously, there is no good reason for some red neck yahoo to have a .50 cal machine gun. I dunno what more women having guns would do. Probably more women shooting people, and more women accidentally shooting themselves.
7) A little of both I think.
8) I don't think the state cares less about women, I just don't think the state cares about anyone. Women are just more likely to be victims.
the answer is always C.
