I love Arizona to pieces!!!
Some snapshots of my trip:
Jerome used to be a mining town that was abandoned when the mine went dry and was taken over by a bunch of hippies that squatted there and then turned it into an artsy town!
Haunted remains of a building in Jerome
My Grandma and I at the winery that makes/sells Maynard's wine
My Uncle being silly in the car
Sedona is beautiful!
My cute cousins!
I took myself on a day road trip up to the Homolovi Ruins and the Painted Desert / Petrified Forest
The Homolovi Ruins... the last place the Hopi people lived before they were moved to the reservations... these are remains of a house at Homolovi II
This is me going into the Homolovi I Ruins
Nothing much is left except for the Little Colorado River
This is a cute little lizard who posed for me!
A petroglyph by the ruins
Petrified wood can cut through glass!
The Agate Bridge (it's the tree that's the bridge)
This whole desert was once mostly submerged in water when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.
I got my kicks on Route 66! It's the only (or one of the only) parts of the original Route 66 that is on nationally protected land. I feel bad for the poor folks who got stuck in the desert with their car broken down and their tires mysteriously gone!
I just love the desert!
Yay desert!!!
The sun set, and I had to leave
That was my trip to the Petrified Forest!
I got ready to go back to my Uncle's and then back to Michigan
Ah, I love Arizona!!!
It was supposed to take me about 3 1/2 hours to get back to my Uncle's from the Petrified Forest, and when I was about half an hour away, I got detoured, and that started a whole new adventure to get back that took an extra 2 hours!!!
The road on my last highway back was closed because the road caved in! I got detoured along the Tonto National Forest (which was really beautiful with a few lakes and big mountains and there was a full moon that evening) and referenced my new phone (it's nice to have Google maps on your phone when you get detoured in another state) and noticed that there was only 2 highways that would get me back to my Uncle's place. One of them was an extra 1 1/2 hours, and the other was only an extra 45 minutes! So myself and a whole bunch of other cars started taking this highway. It was literally a dirt road in the mountains... no guard rails, no pavement after the first 1/2 mile and it was about a 1 1/2 lane road. We're all just going on our merry way for about 20 minutes and are going 25 mph up and down this road. Then there are some headlights... coming up the other way. I, of course, immediately think there's bad trouble, and yup... there was. See, some semi trucks decided to take this road to avoid the detour... and one of them got stuck at the bottom of the mountain... and then another one got stuck... and then a third one was able to get turned around, because the 2 stuck semis make it impossible to go any further... and that third semi was coming back up the mountain and we all had to turn around! So I got to turn around Austin Powers style on this road and get my ass back to where I had turned on the highway in the first place and go the extra 1 1/2 hours, which turned into 2 by that time... and with my road rage helping, too as I was seriously pissed since I'd been up since 8 and wasn't going to be able to sleep until 1 and nobody was going fast enough for me to get back!
But it was a fun little adventure!
And that was my trip!
