I'm not saying it would necessarily make the shot better or worse. People tend to naturally look to the eyes. In focus, it might anchor people's attention farther into the image and humanize the subject. Out of focus, it might enhance a sense of mystery or give a more surreal feeling. Depends on what you want. One could even play with a series of images of the same painting with the area of focus changed to lead our attention around the image following the path you choose for us. You could also choose to include bits of your gold leaf and set the area of sharp focus on those. Okay, enough brainstorming. I better get ready for work. Thanks for the mental diversion to help me wake up. :)
