I like the comic books. I had particularly few this week but the ones I bought were all excellent and the ones I just read were generally good, too.
the Boys (dynamite)
Well, issue 7 was on my list, but I haven't read it yet because I was going through the trade paperback. I read issue 1 when it came out and was severely disappointed based on the creators involved, but I wanted to give it a second chance since so many readers love it so damn much.
Honestly, I don't think there would be as much interest in this book today if it hadn't been canned by DC. I was pleased to find that there is indeed a story beyond just a string of setups for disgusting shock moments. The art is good, but it's almost ruined by the super-saturated coloring.
I will probably keep reading, but I really don't like it enough to buy it. So Garth Ennis hates superheroes. I get it.
S'OK. (Ennis/ Robertson)
Daredevil #97 (marvel)
Consistently great comic. I don't really have anything new to say this time, except that the ending of this issue made me gasp out loud.
GREAT. (Brubaker/ Lark)
Green Lantern #20 (dc)
Again, a very solid title, so I don't have much new to say in terms of a review. I did get a funny scan, though. Guard your butthole, Hal!!!
REALLY GOOD. (main story- Johns/ Acuna; backup- Johns/ Gibbons)
Hellboy: Darkness Calls #2 of 6 (dark horse)
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. (Mignola/ Fegredo)
Justice Society of America #6 (dc)
The first four issues of this series were incredible, and then came the Lightning Saga, a crossover with the JLA and the Legion of Super-Heroes. Every other chapter is in Justice League of America, and crossovers like that suck bad, in my opinion. At least Dale Eaglesham is back for this issue after last month's fill-in, and we also learned how the new Starman appeared in Kingdom Come, but otherwise this issue was not very interesting. I will be very glad when this story arc is over and this title goes back to having its own story.
S'OK. (Johns/ Eaglesham)
New Avengers: Illuminati #3 of 5(marvel)
This series is awesome, especially because each issue is a complete and self-contained story. They're all heavy on action and spectacle, and this one was all about the Beyonder. Remember him, from that ridiculous Contest of Champions? Well this issue explains where he came from and somehow even makes him a cool character.
GREAT. (Bendis & Reed/ Cheung)
the Shaolin Cowboy #7 (burlyman entertainment)
Man, this is about the weirdest comic out. It barely every comes out, but this publisher's philosophy is quality, not quantity. They only publish two titles, which come out whenever they're good and ready, but each issue is so singularly entertaining that the long waits won't bother you.
The first scan there is from the inside covers of this issue, I just thought it looked cool. The second one is an example of the unbelievably detailed artwork, and the last one is a taste of how fucking bizarre this comic is.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. (Geofrey Darrow)
Silver Surfer: Requiem #1 of 4 (marvel)
I have a hard time with painted comics, but I have to admit that the art in this issue is fantastic. The story serves as a great introduction to the character by recapping his origin as well as effectively showcasing his relationship with the Fantastic Four. Besides that, barely anything happens story-wise, but was a good read anyways and it has me looking forward to the rest of this miniseries.
PRETTY GOOD. (Straczynski/ Ribic)
Ultimate Fantastic Four #42
Pasqual Ferry is back on the art for this story arc, so I will be reading. His style is perfectly suited for slick, imaginitive sci-fi, and I really enjoyed God War, the last story arc this team did together. This should be good, but I can't really say so just yet.
S'OK. (Carey/ Ferry)
