I don't recall if I have written about Freaks and Geeks yet, but it was such a good show I don't mind repeating my self. First off I grew up in Michigan, I recall the era and the place that the show was set in, even though I was a lot younger than the kids on the show.
The show followed the Weir family, Sam and LIndsey as they went though high school. Lindsey was transforming herself from geek to freak and Sam was dealing with the fact that he was a geek. Around each of them orbited their friends who each had their own stories to tell.
What made the show was the relationships between the characters, and the fact that we were seeing real people with real issues and problems. There was injustice and kids not knowing how to deal with what they were feeling and what was expected from them. I like that the there was a effort to find actors that didn't look like hollywood images of youth, there were mid western looking kids and people who were overweight.
The writing was smart, funny, sad and insightful, and allowed for development of the characters. It makes complete sense to me that the show failed. The fact that NBC kept moving the show around their schedule and reality of the show needing more time to find its place than the network was willing to give it.
Lucky for us there is a deluxe DVD box set of the entire show out. It not only has the show, but a abundance of solid extras, commentaries, out takes and information.
Freaks and Geeks is just another in a long list of shows that dared to be solid and good, and America didn't bother to support....
next time Firefly.
Notes:
1 Back from LA, went record shopping for records in Hollywood, bought a Johnny Cash Tribute, Dear, Johnny with Deadbolt doing an killer cover of the Orange Blossom Special.
2 I was in town to see my best friend get married, and went to a strip club for the first time. It was weird, a little scary, and after the initial shock boring. The music was lame, on the other hand there are no songs that I worry will be unlistenable because of having heard them there, and the women were mostly unimpressive. It takes more than being nikkid to impress me.
3 The reception was held at the Bullocks Wilshire Building which is a great old Art Deco building. I can't even describe how cool it was to see the inside and the look of the place.
4 Of course the wedding made me think about the potential of my ever getting married and she who haunts me. I don't have any easy answers aside from the fact that I can't seem to shake her from my heart. I try to imagine being with someone else and it always seems to be her that I end up thinking of.
5 the other part is that I've met a woman at work that I like a lot, but I don't know what to do. I really don't want to pollute my work place with any weirdness, and my track record with finding women who are attracted to me that I have asked out is really bad.
6 I get that Clockwork Orange stomach cramps and inability to talk when I even consider making a move.... anyway the questions for this time around?
??????????
I feel really out of the loop with pop music, do you?
I sometimes find myself watching crap TV cause the woman on the show is 'hot' (Jag, Law & Order SVU, ect) is that bad?
I also feel like I'm avoiding the TCSG crew cause I'm really not all that into drinking, or partying, and honestly I don't feel like I belong... is that bad? am I over reacting?

as for the strip club - i've never been to one so i can't comment
as for the old girl - i agree with nordicgoddess - just go out and date other people. dwelling on the "what could have been" will only make you miserable. plus it's easy for memories and old emotions to be idealized when reality would really have been a very different thing. so, even if you ever did hook up with the girl that haunts you - it would never live up the ideal of what it is in your head. so... anyhow - don't feel like you have to find a girlfriend right away, just go out and have fun with as many girls as you want!
as for the new girl - work and dating can be weird. but if you really like her, flirt and see if she responds back - and if so, then what the heck, go for it!
as for the SGTC group, you sholudn't worry about feeling like you belong or not. nobody really "belongs" in the SGTC group - it's the craziness of how completely different everyone is that makes it fun. just give it a try - and don't be self-conscious or analytical about it - let your brain take a vacation and just sit back, observe, participate, enjoy! you can't create comedy as good as what naturally comes from a group of crazy twin cities people. and MOST of the SGTC group doesn't bite...
as for pop music. just turn on mtv (and keep it on) for awhile and then every now and then flip the radio to KDWB and you will immediatley know what is up with pop music these days. but even without doing that i can tell you you're not missing much. you could also just paruse the most requested downloads on the itunes store...
as for bad tv with hot people - that's kind of the point of a lot of tv isn't it?
