Night of the Comet,
Ok, so like the world is ending. RIght, so the earth passes through the tail of a
comet and turns people into dust... it's not like that cartoon where the a run away comet passes between the earth and the moon ripping the moon in half. So everyone that wasn't in some sort of contrived shelter turns to dust and vanishes, only a couple of valley girls who have a bit of combat training from their green beret father, a trucker and so not so smart scientist types are left. Ok there are like a bunch of people who are turning into zombie things slowly. The valley girls go to a radio station only to find a crude computerized DJ machine playing the Hits by rote (a comet on things yet to come??) and then they hit the mall where they shop before getting captured by mutant stock boys, and then there is the ending with the scientists showing up and trying to take their blood or something gross like that.
any way you look at it, night of the comet is one of the best entries in the 80's B film sweepstakes. It's got weirdo killers, sci fi silliness and anyone can die at any moment. Catherine Mary Stewart B queen supreme, gives one of her best performances as the lead valley girl, and that guy who was sentenced to Star Trek Voyager as the second in command plays a truck driver. It's not the best film of all time, it's not really all that profound, what makes it so enjoyable is that it's fun, it's clever, it's got all that fun B film action and it's a great way to waste an afternoon. Sometimes that all it takes.
notes:
1- It's not on DVD yet.... there was a rumor of a DVD release early this year but nothing has hit the shelf yet.
2- There was talk of spinning it off into a TV series
3- when I was in college a girl that I was interested in asked me who did I think was attractive, cause I didn't talk about that kind of stuff my answer? Kim Cattrall and Catherine Mary Stewart
4- I have seen almost all of the films that Catherine Mary Stewart appeared in.
5- what's your fave B film, do you remember the old days when UHF TV stations would play B flick at night and on weekends?
cheaters was pretty good - especially for an hbo movie. i can't stand jeff daniels in films where he is trying to be funny, but i like him in more serious roles.
barcelona reminded me alot of swingers - that back forth banter between the two main characters, one trying to "help" with the love life, blah blah blah. it was a decent flick but i think i like swingers better
so the new job is treating you well? when does it open?
