Hey everyone! Sorry I've been pretty terrible about updating. I think it's been a mixture of ennui, my work schedule, and general laziness that keeps me away from here, though I do enjoy spending time on here when I actually do. I've been a pretty busy Iggy. Both of my jobs have been pretty great, especially the horse farm. That place is my respite from anxiety and depression. I realized today through simple arithmetic that the cost of my psych medication and monthly doctor visits would equal about the amount needed to keep a horse where I work. Now, I was trying to figure out how to pay for my medication. I might just want to try to pay for a horse instead. It would have the same effect.
(Don't worry. I won't be getting a horse until I have a car that isn't in a constant state of falling apart.)
Trump took office. It's going to be a very interesting four years. I'm a silver lining kind of person and my outlook on all of this shit show that is now our government is that at least we'll make some good art and music. Trying times are good for the arts, really. The more tumultuous the times the better the art, music, and literature are. Think about it this way, the late nineties produced so much crap music wise I'm surprised we didn't all die from boredom. We were also in a period of peace. Well, we were until 9/11.
Speaking of Trump...I went to the local women's march here in Charlotte. It was pretty good being there with thousands of other like minded individuals fighting for our rights as women as I feel like we're treated like second class citizens. A big thing for me is my right to a safe and legal abortion should I choose to have one, so I was mainly there for that. I wish it had been more inclusive of other struggles various women face, especially women of color, disabled women, and sex workers though.
That's my friend Sarah and I before the march started. I'm making a goofy face.
That's a protest sign I was particularly fond of.
And this guy was pretty damn awesome.
In other news, I went to the opera yesterday with friends to see La Traviata. For those of you who aren't up on your opera knowledge La Traviata is based on a book by Alexander Dumas about a courtesan who falls in love. As can be predicted, it ends tragically. The opera was the inspiration for the movie 'Pretty Woman'. Obviously, they tweaked the ending of the movie.
I really identified with the main character, Violetta. There is a line she sings, "God may forgive this fallen woman, but men never will." It struck a chord in me, because even though we like to see ourselves as a progressive society we still have these very antiquated notions regarding women and their sexuality. The concept of the fallen woman still exists, even though I think that people would like to think it was something of the past. It has manifested itself now in the derogatory terms 'slut' and 'ho' and the idea that if a woman posts too many selfies that she's 'thirsty'. God forbid we flirt, fuck who we want, and feel good about the way we look, am I right ladies??
Speaking of selfies...
Fuck the idea of pining for attention. I just know I'm hot.
