Well, there's no contest here. My favorite body mod is my Jersey tattoo, my homage to my beloved home state.
That's an old picture, but it's the best picture I have of it. What surprises me the most is the amount of people who mistake the outline that is obviously New Jersey for other places. People have mistook it for California, Louisiana, and England, among others. New Jersey looks like none of these places. I always have to bite my tongue when this happens because my first reaction is always, "What the fuck? Did you fail geography in school?" I could understand if people from other countries failed to recognize the outline of the greatest state ever, but people from the United States? I mean, c'mon...
People also fail to recognize the quite obvious Bruce Springsteen lyrics from one of his most well known songs. They think it's a tattoo about running. You see, I got the lyrics because a) The Boss is quintessential Jersey and b) I thought 'Jersey Girl' and 'Dirty Jersey' were used ad nauseum already. I wanted my New Jersey tattoo to have a sort of unique quality about it.
I got the tattoo when I wasn't living in New Jersey and missed it terribly. I still miss New Jersey, though I don't know if I'll ever be able to live there again. Also, after the winter they had up there this past year I don't even know if I would want to live up north again because of my utter loathing for snow and ice. However, I am tickled pink because I'll be up there for a week early next month. I haven't been there in almost six months and am really looking forward to having some disco fries and pizza that's actually good. You have no idea how horrid it is to have pizza here that merely passes for what pizza is supposed to be. First world problems I know, but still...
The tattoo is also a great way to meet other people from New Jersey. I meet A LOT of people from the good old dirty Jersey on an almost daily basis. I swear, we should have a neighborhood here called 'Little Jersey'. Perhaps we could open up a real diner that's open 24 hours and a real pizza place.
