You know how sometimes you're going along and things aren't so bad -- are pretty good, wonderful even -- and you actually feel happy, and then something shitty happens that changes everything?
Today was one of those days.
I've had rabbits for many years, and of my current bunch, all were rescues, either from abuse situations or they were found abandoned on city streets.
Today, a friend of mine who works in the rabbit section of a local shelter sent me a press release that had a link to the website of Marcy, another friend that I got one of my girls from. Marcy's "Save A Bunny" rescue and adoption site has the story of Phoenix. This has broken my heart.
What bothers me most, shockingly enough, isn't what happened to Phoenix, because despite his horrible injuries, he's going to be okay. If anyone can pull him through, it's Marcy. No, what bothers me most, the thing that's eating away at me right now, is knowing that there will be another "Phoenix" tomorrow ... and the day after ... and the day after that ...
The only thing I can take comfort in is the knowledge that there are people like Marcy out there working every single day to make a difference in the lives of animals that cannot speak for and defend themselves. I am proud to know her.
If you can make a contribution to Phoenix's medical care, no matter how little you may think it is, please do. Trust me, NO amount will be too small to help this brave little guy. Just follow the Paypal link at the bottom of Phoenix's page or head straight to the donation page from here. And please tell your friends about this story. Getting the word out to a large number of people about these sorts of stories really does have a lot of power when the time comes to prosecute.
I'm going to go cuddle my bunnies and have a good cry now.
