True, but again it's not like the Democrats don't have more than their share of self-serving, greedy dickheads. But as I say, I'm probably just being too cynical. Still, a pessimist is never disappointed wink

I'm not sure I'm a fan, exactly. But she is a great writer, and we need more like her.
sockpuppet:
Yes smile

I think that's the only SF book my Dad ever liked.

It works so well, on so many different levels: politics, physics, ecology, characterisation, the whole interplay of all those things. And her descriptions stay with me; the Abbenay trams, and the excremental-shade-of-orange blanket. And her ear for a name is spot on.

So... it's a few weeks since I started my new job, and I'm having some serious problems.

The core of it is this: because the department I am in is groaning under the sheer weight of work coming in, I am not getting proper, thorough training; the people responsible simply don't have the time. They're aware of the situation, and that it's bothering me, but...

Actually i've worked in sciencey stuff too, in labs and stuff, but all to do with plants, microbiology, and agrochemicals and things smile

Hope it improves. It's always worth keeping an eye on the jobs market though.

damn, if my wife was still on here should could probably help. My advice is to try and hang on and make the proper people aware that you need help. Even if that means having to go to the top

alright then, earthlings. this is my favourite new song:

check out the guy on the stand-up bass - what a star. i'd love to be in a band like that. i think they might object when they heard me actually play something though blush perhaps they'd let me make the tea.

and if you liked that, check this out:

it's the same band, but this time...

I'd love to be in afull on, horn section and all psycho billy band (ala Rocket From The Crypt, The Rezillos). That song is ace smile

Solar Empire looks decent, I'm not keen on games set in the past for some reason (it wasn't me who blogged about Total War tongue )
johnnyforeigner:
You loved Rocket From The Crypt, more than anything ever. You try to pretend not, because otherwise you'd cry yourself to sleep every night since they split up.

Wait, that's me frown

You are entirely right, of course. I was just amused that it sounded like a cheap FX pedal. My bad.

It is a good demo of the effect, actually. It's just that we're moving into a post-Photoshop world, where people's first reaction when they run across a piece of film which "looks strange" is "oh, they shot that on a sound stage in Pasadena". So yeah, I plead guilty to being far too cynical. frown
spamtwo:
They did show a condensed half hour version of Mythbusters on BBC2 a few years ago and yes Brainiac is only on Sky. It mostly involves blowing up caravans

Ha, I'm sure it'll be more of a pfft and fizz than big bang, but the possibilities are interesting nontheless.
The scifi geek in me loves the theory that the LHC will inadvertently create a mini universe which they can't even see and won't know about.

I was homeless at 15 so my A levels were taken around a full time and a part time job. When I eventually got an educational stage where I could take a Degree, I had neither the support nor ineterst to actually do it unfortunately, a lot of things were going on smile
