i think the only part of me that is evolving this summer is my ability as a photographer. i really haven't read enough for school. But I am having fun. And, starting next week, I'm going to read much more.
What you mentioned is one of the many huge dillemmas that anthropologists face. If I had to do it over again, I'm not sure if I would have chosen to be an anthropologist--maybe I would have, but I can't be sure. Until the past few decades, ethnography was seen as a somewhat objective method of social science with the aim of capturing a slice of reality. In the 80's, with the postmodernist influence on anthropology, many scholars had a crisis, worrying that they shouldn't speak for others, and concluded that the work they did in anthropology was closer to fiction than science.
I've decided that the best way to go about it is to try to genuinely try to be influenced by the lessons of critical postmodernism, but not to be completely crippled by this crisis. I think we should know that we can never completely accurately represent others, but, nevertheless, we should continually strive for more accurate representations.
