Wow, what an amazing story. I am so happy that you, your family, and the kitties were safe! I can't imagine what it would be like to have two hours to grab everything and anything, without knowing when I would be able to return. We were hit hard during Sandy & Irene at my home in NJ, but only lost what was on the first floor. Luckily I had taken our photo albums with me. I dislike how Memorial Day has become a day to buy things on sale and get drunk though. That's not exactly a great way to remember our fallen heroes.

I agree entirely @iggy. It has become like so many other holidays. People have long forgotten the reason behind them and they don't care as long as they get a day off of work (unlike me). The reason you're free to shop or get drunk at a bbq (or crawfish boil here in New Orleans) is the sacrifice of over a million men and women.
