update: i wear contacts, and i typically take a shower first thing in the morning. one of the disadvantages to this is that i never really see my tub/shower with good vision. well, i just spent a few minutes looking at it quite closely as i bent over it buzzing my head down with clippers. it was remarkably filthy. i was so disgusted i had to scrub it down before i could even take a shower to get all the clippings off'n me.

so, the moral of the story: if you're visually-limited like me, check your tub with your glasses on or contacts in sometime. chances are it's worse than you think!
