I finally took the plunge and had a vasectomy.
The wires have been disconnected and I will not reproduce. This will certainly save the lady friend from a lifetime of pills--I mean, that can't possibly be good for a person.
It was a pretty strange experience. I arrived at the hospital around 8:00 AM and did a lot of sitting around in nothing but a flimsy gown without so much as a magazine to read until about 11:00 when they stuck me in a bed and wheeled me to surgery prep. Five or six people asked me the same questions over and over--what's my name? what am I here for? am I allergic to any medications?
Finally they set me up with an IV and wheeled me into the OR where I was given a general sedative--a very nice treat I must say. Within seconds of the injection I was getting some pretty strong visuals--the pattern on the floor went all swirly. Then they gave me something that made everything completely numb from the waist on down and got to work.
The actual procedure seemed to take about 5 minutes, but I was all doped up and lost all sense of time. Now that I think of it, I don't remember leaving the OR, but they wheeled me into a recovery room where I had to stay until I could move my legs again. After that I hung out in another recovery room until I could stand and walk--about 3-4 hours of waiting.
Then they packed me off with a prescription for Tylenol with codeine and an ice pack for my nuts.
This all happened a week ago and it hurt like the devil for the first 24 hours. Since then my traumatized balls have been pretty sensitive, but less and less as time goes on. There's absolutely no noticeable change--except for the scars I expect where the stitches are now.
I'm still pondering the implications, but I'm glad I did it.
