This is an exceptionally large musical instrument.

The Franklin D Roosevelt Mid Hudson Bridge at Poughkeepsie, NY.
Composer and musician Joseph Bertolozzi and assistants used various mallets and objects to strike different structures and surfaces on the bridge. At one point he even poured steel shot and BBs down the inside of one of the 315 ft (96 m) support towers to create a rain stick effect. The sounds were all recorded and sampled into a computer. The over 300 individual sounds were linked by Mr. Bertolozzi to music notation software files which he used to trigger the sampled sounds when he played the pieces he composed. The result was a site-specific sound art installation

Bridge Music!
There are no other sounds in the music other than those produced by and recorded on the bridge. Be sure to follow this link to Mr. Bertolozzi's site. Click on the links there to check out the fascinating New York Times video and to see and hear Joseph Bertolozzi and some of his incredible music.

There are two listening stations on the bridge (one at each tower) where pedestrians and cyclists can play all of the pieces on demand. Bridge Music is also broadcast 24 hours a day in the parks adjacent to the bridge. It is amazing. I stop to listen and enjoy whenever Im in the area.

Well, were expecting rain here for the next few days. I enjoyed my walk over the bridge early this morning but it may be the last time that I get out for a while.
More rain means more mold. Ive scrubbed down nearly every surface in this place with bleach or other mold killing cleaners but I still have a serious problem. Its beginning to look like the mold might be under the floor or in the walls. This structure was flooded by the Tenmile River a few months before I moved in. The water inside rose to a height of nearly 15 inches (38 cm). My landlord says that he ripped out and replaced all of the soaked and water damaged wood and insulation material but he has lied or been deceitful concerning several other issues so I have my doubts concerning this claim. Theres not much I can do about mold in the walls. It will only get worse. I hate moving but I may have to.
The good news is that more rain also means more movies. I was planning to go to New York yesterday to watch Harold and Maude in Bryant Park. Plans changed (they usually do) and I ended up staying around home. No problem I own the DVD so I watched it here as part of an in-home double feature I also watched Incendiary with Michelle Williams. I adore Michelle Williams. What an amazing actress. What talent. Such beauty
Here are some of the other movies (at least the rented ones) that I've enjoyed this month. Some great; some not so great, but I like mixing things up a bit.

The big crises of the week so far occurred on Sunday morning. I gave Rhiannon her breakfast and then realized that she had just eaten the last of her cat food. Something needed to be done or there would be a whole heap o trouble later on that evening. As long as I had to go out anyway I decided to drive a few extra miles and take an interesting walk.

This is the twin span Hamilton Fish Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. The first span was opened in 1963 and was already over capacity by 1964. In the 1970s, when I first started using the bridge, traffic would often be backed up several miles on either side. It took 17 years but they finally built and opened the second span in 1980.

I had never walked across this bridge before and this seemed like the day to do it. I drove across the Hudson River to Newburgh, parked in the commuter lot by the bridge and walked the southern (eastbound) side. It is the slightly shorter of the two with a total length of 7855 ft (2304 m). The longest cantilevered span is 1000 ft (304.8 m). A walk in both directions is around 3 miles perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

Its been raining for a few hours now. Who know when Ill see the Sun again. I hope that theres some sunshine in your life.
All the best
