It rained for most of the past week. I managed to walk or hike six out of the last seven days, but the weather has been too unpredictable to do much else. Monday was more of the same 40% chance of rain with thunderstorms predicted in the afternoon. I took the opportunity to drive into New York with my friends anyway.
Life has been a bit too good lately and it would appear that Ive packed on a couple of pounds. Exercise is a priority, so I decided to walk to New Jersey.

This is the George Washington Bridge. It has a span of 3,500 ft (1,100 m) a total length of 4,760 ft (1,451 m) and was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it open in 1931. It is currently the only suspension bridge in existence that carries 14 lanes of vehicular traffic. It spans the Hudson River between the borough of Manhattan in New York City and Fort Lee, New Jersey. It's one of my favorite local bridges. I'd wanted to walk over the GWB for as long as I can remember. I finally actually did it for the first time just last year(!)

I enjoyed that river walk so much that I decided to take another this time on the other side of Manhattan.

I crossed the East River on the historic and beautiful Brooklyn Bridge. With a span of 1,595.5 ft (486.3 m) and a total length of 5,989 ft (1825 m) it was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it opened in 1883 and its towers were the tallest structures in the Western Hemisphere. It has long been my favorite local bridge.

I ended up walking a total of around 12 miles. Cupcakes, beer, bar snacks and then pizza on the way home probably provided far more additional calories that I could have possibly burned throughout the day, but it was, as always, all worth it.

Oh... I almost forgot - my friends are playing this weekend at the 40th annual Clearwater Festival -The Great Hudson River Revival. Pete Seeger, Richie Havens, Susan Tedechi, Taj Mahal, MacTalla Mor and many others. It should be really great!
