Im thinking about palindromes right now. I was staring in the mirror, thinking about the symmetry of most things, and I ended up stuck on palindromes. Start at the nucleus, work in both directions. It is painstaking but rewarding to create such a carefully constructed code. Balance. Ive pored over letters until I was cross-eyed, trying to make them come together into the perfect palindrome. Its so hard to come up with something that makes sense. LISA BONET ATE NO BASIL. Thats one of the best ones Ive ever heard. Or, SATAN, OSCILLATE METALLIC SONATAS. Fantastic stuff. The palindromes I write usually are simple and kind of fatalistic: DRAW NOT ONWARD, or, NO DEVIL LIVED ON. Still, its a small victory when the letters actually work together. Words intoxicate me, I feel drunk, sometimes, with the possibilities of our language.
I love puzzles. Things with clear-cut solutions that come together tidily and snap close for good. I love sharp knives that slice through on their first try. Movies with linear plot lines. Clean breaks. Fast goodbyes. Its better to be devastated once than to linger indefinitely. But most of all, I love the language that allows me to tell you this.
I used to believe that our souls are language, that the idea of a higher divinity or purpose of human beings developed right along with the words we used to develop these ideas, so are indistinguishable from each other. Then I realized that was just a fancy way of saying absolutely nothing, and stopped trying to express the unexpressable. Theres a whole world to examine and decipher here on earth, a lifetime of puzzles to occupy my idle hours.
