1. Open up the music player on your computer.
2. Set it to play your entire music collection.
3. Hit the shuffle command.
4. Tell us the title of the next five songs that show up (with their musicians), no matter how embarrassing. That's right, no skipping that Carpenters tune that will totally destroy your hip credibility. It's time for total musical honesty. Write it up in your blog or journal and link back to at least a couple of the other sites where you saw this.
5. If you get the same artist twice, you may skip the second (or third, or etc.) occurrences. You don't have to, but since randomness could mean you end up with a list of ten songs with five artists, you can if you'd like.
6. Tell a story about each song.
You Never Knew Me, Magazine - I didn't really know who Magazine were until a colleague at work told me about them. I've not really been all that taken with the tracks of theirs that I have, but then they fall into that post-punk movement that I've never really had more than a passing interest in. The same colleague was something of an arrogant idiot anyway, and eventually left the company before he got fired.
Miles Runs The Voodoo Down, Miles Davis - Whilst I imagine every man and his dog has heard of Miles Davis, I doubt that many have taken the time to listen. I was one of those men until I watched Michael Mann's Collateral, starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. Following the film, I went out and bought Bitches Brew.
Heaven, DJ Sammy featuring Yannou - A cover of the Brian Adams "classic". Somehow, despite my general dislike of anything europop, I couldn't help but download this due to an embarrassing soft spot for the original.
Metamorphosis Four, Philip Glass - Again, Glass was someone whose music I came to via a film. I was really moved having been to see The Hours at the cinema, which was scored by Glass. Having had my interest peaked, and having been given the soundtrack for my birthday, I went out and bought a glass compilation which featured this track.
The Shoop Shoop Song, Cher - this never fails to remind me of a school trip that I went on to Berlin. After travelling by coach for twenty four hours to get there and an enjoyable four days in the German city that was newly united after the fall of the Berlin wall, we danced in the aisles of the coach to this song which was a big hit at the time. It was just before we were due to head home, and there were a few teary eyes at the prospect of the trip coming to an end and having to leave that amazing place.
