Today I hit a Milestone on a secret project I have been working on. For the last couple of months I had [silly?] aspirations of trying my hand at the designer toy business. You know, those crazy collectable "art" toys you can find at places like KidRobot.com.
So a couple of years ago I had doodled this little character during a moment of sadness (due to a girl I was in Love with leaving me) and recently I thought, "I wonder if I can make my little character into a toy?"
For the last couple of months I have been working with a team on modeling the character, making a sculpt from the 3D model (based on my initial doodle) and getting interest from various toy boutiques that would carry this toy... basically long story short, it has snow-balled into a major endevour with much interest among some of the "experts" and veterens in this industry, and today I received my final painted sculpt of my Broken Heart Robot! You can see a picture of it HERE.
So it is now off to China for manufacturing. I will be making a limited edition number of 1000 pieces complete with packaging and have already received confirmation from KidRobot, Munky King and Meltdown comics that they will be carrying my little guy. (Gaston at Meltdown comics hooked me up with his distributor, so the Broken Heart Robot will also be in an additional 100+ stores as well!)
I am very excited about all of this and am suprised at how far I was able to take it. I wasn't sure at first if I would be able to pull it off, but, as I said earlier, it has snow-balled, so much so that there is already talk about possibly making it into an Animated Series at Nickelodeon! I will be officially "pitching" it to them once the toy is released (around April; three month manufacturing time.)
