Well, I just finished a book, Honor Lost. It is about honor killings in the Middle East. It was kind of disturbing. It is a true story about two best friends (girls). One of them starts dating this guy, without her familys consent (as dating is not aloud). They fall in love and her family finds out. Now this is where it gets disturbing. Her father stabbed her 13 times. He did this to cleanse the family of her sins. He said that she had sex and was a whore; she never did have sex. In honor killings by law an autopsy has to be performed. He spent a couple days in jail and then was released. He never spent anymore time. The court actually approved of his actions.
Honor killings against women in the Middle East date back thousands of years. It is an old custom that they still follow to this day. The sad thing is that most victims of honor killings did nothing (sexual). Their family just jumps the gun and kills them. The victims are never talked about and looked down on. Even rape victims can be killed for the honor of the family.
Reading this book really made me appreciate my life as a female living in America, and the rights and freedoms that I have. I never expected to be this moved from a book. I think this is a new begging in my life
