This is not a Japan story. Rather, it is a traffic story straight from traffic hell (Boston).

Today was the second time this month that I came to a traffic circle (rotary) and found everything stopped because of a funeral procession. The funeral traffic, in addition, goes very slow. So we wait, and lots of cars are waiting, most not knowing why everything is stopped and some honking.

Finally it goes through, and all of the cars spill in simultaneously from the 6 or so directions. It is clogged chaos.

Of course, then an ambulance arrives, lights blazing and sirens blaring. We all must move out of the way. But where?

Why do I always find myself in the path of ambulances and hearses?

(More Japan stuff eventually)

There's a gigantic graveyard and three churches on the way to my school, and the only time I'm ever late for work is when I get stuck behind a funeral procession. Unfortunately, it was happening so often that I now have to leave ten minutes early just in case.
