I've been thinking for a very, very, long time about getting my first tattoo.
I've toyed with the idea of a Zuni Bear or a bear paw print. Purposeful phrases that mean something just to me. A Union Jack and even The Who logo.
But, now I think that I've finally decided what my first ink will be.
My late uncle Sam, spent his entire working life in the British Merchant Navy. He had many tattoos done by shipmates whilst on long sea voyages.
During World War Two he worked on troop carrying ships bringing American G.I.'s to England. He also severed on ships in several theatres of war. At one stage he spent over 18 months without coming ashore.
Even in old age Sam, who had moved to Australia in 1963, signed letters and Christmas cards; " Your Pissed Uncle 'Sailor' Sam. One of my most treasured possessions is his last Christmas card which arrived after he died. Not an educated man, his final letter to me was incredibly moving.
So, in honour of Sam, a Matelot from the age of 15, it was join the navy or go to Borstal. I have decided to have an anchor design similar to those on British Royal and Merchant Navy cap badges (see picture).
What do you guys think? Too cheesy? Too simplistic?
