I read your description on my laptop via WiFi *right* before the death of Achilles. That was really, really cool. We also started chanting "Legolas! Legolas!" after Orlando Bloom drew a bead on him with the bow.
I also love mythology, but I really enjoyed seeing the Illiad as a human story rather than (to use your phrase) human beings simply being chess pieces in the hands of the gods.

So I settle, instead, for being incredibly funny, witty, smart, well-read, fun. And you know what? It's weird. People start to think of me as good-looking. Or, at least, better looking.
You've got all kinds of things going for you, and I think you may be prettier than you know.

And yes, turkey cranberry sandwiches are the best.
I hadn't thought of it until now, but you're right: the complete absence of gods and goddesses changes the whole tone of the movie from the Illiad. It's a very human story.
