So thus begins the somewhat wordy tale of the sgct kids journey to the big, bad city.
The weekend got off to a good start when a bunch of us went to go see the new lineup of honkeykong's band bent. We had a few beers, a few laughs and worked on finalizing our plans for the trip to the sgny open call the next day. It was decided that due to my work schedule there would be two waves of us going into the city. grumpybear, cinderola, and laerkai would head in early to check out the sex museum and welntaod and I would meet up with them for dinner.
I woke up with a mild hangover easily cured by mass amounts of coffee, water, and a few hours of helping an artist install a rather complex piece. After work I hooked up with welntaod and we grabbed some coffee and set out for union station to catch a train to New York. The train ride was uneventful and we were entertained by a group of underage yet slightly buzzed college students who got on in Fairfield. We were met at grand central by the rest of our group and decided to go out to Brooklyn and grab a bite before heading to the event. Luckily, laerkai got directions, as I had my streets and avenues reversed and would have ended up far from our intended destination.
We arrived in Brooklyn and while wandering in the wrong direction searching for a restaurant were greeted by some natives with calls of you fucking yuppies are ruining Brooklyn, get the fuck out, save the whales, bullshit. Im not sure why they attacked our perceived environmentalism, but it was intimidating nonetheless. However, we ventured on and found a diner and put some food down for the night of drinking ahead.
We were some of the first to arrive at the bar and began hoping that our friend honkeykong would show up. Being a member of both sgct and sgny we were thinking that he could provide us with some introductions and some much needed confidence. So we spent some time huddled around a table hatching plots of inventive ways to go about meeting people and coming up blank. Im rather thankful to my smoking habit, for if it werent for the conversation that naturally occurs amongst the frigid exiles outside I may not have met anyone. But luckily I got the chance to talk to some really great people.
We started to loosen up a bit and mingle and watch the clock as the opportunity for trains home slowly faded. So we were overjoyed when the ultracool jaidee granted us refugee status and offered to look after us until we could catch the fist morning train home. With much confusion we finally ordered cars and, after finding a bribable cabby, ventured off to the bar to extend the evening. However, upon arriving at the coordinates we understood, we found only a closed pizza place and a subway stop. After a bit of wandering and asking some locals laerkais thought that we were in the midst of an initiation prank didnt seem so unbelievable. At least they gave us an intersection with a train stop so we could get back home. This began the overwhelming recitation of what may be our new motto wheres your sense of adventure? this being borrowed from barclays cabaret video only made it all the more hilarious.
We set off wandering carroll gardens in the direction of bars looking for the bar, bar bar, babar, or any such variation. Finally we settled on the zombie hut as a bathroom break and, admitting a bit of defeat, stayed for a drink amidst a lovely tiki theme. About last call we took a diner recommendation from the bartender and ventured on again. After a tremendous breakfast and much childhood tv reminiscing at 4:45 we got up to get back to grand central to catch the 5:40 back to points east only to find that due to construction on the f we had to head in the wrong direction and transfer back. We got really giggly on the station platform where we got to convince grumpybear that a plastic shopping bag was a subway rat. We got even more giggly when I realized that we would be somewhere on the lower east side when the 5:40 was departing.
Sure enough we were at the delancy st stop at precisely 5:40 am and with tears in our eyes we continueds on to grand central now to catch the 7:07. we arrived just as the starbucks was opening, refueled, and waited it out until the train doors opened for boarding when we got comfy, fired up the ipods, and prepared for the last leg of our travels. I think the sun officially rose somewhere around rye.
Got home safe, sound and sleepy about 9:30 this morning.
Much thanks to sgny for throwing a hell of a party and to all the members I met officially or otherwise. Hope to do it again soon.
