It's been a while since I've updated my journal but I'm off work sick and don't have much else to do.
Let's see, my birthday was good. The jazz club we went to was actually really, really good. George Melly is fucking brilliant, if you ever get the chance to go see him do. We went to the symphony as well, the Mozart was pretty boring but the the Shostakovich was brilliant. I hope I can tickets to see Beethoven's 9th with full chorus in April but la_zorra is poor so we'll see.
Also finally got along to an Arsenal match, the Carling Cup semi 2nd leg against Wigan. Disappointing way to lose but if anyone's going to beat Arsenal I'm glad it was Wigan - I've kind of a soft spot for them. It was the same with Wimbledon when they were in the top flight. The Six Nations is next week but there's no way I can afford tickets for any of the games. Even if I could I don't fancy Ireland's chances away from home in any of their games (England and France). In the past the team hinged on Darcy's form and O'Driscoll's fitness but as the core of team ages the talent just doesn't seem to be coming through. I'd say the same about England (more relevant a year or two ago maybe) but their second string is far stronger than ours. My money's on the French this year, as long as they avoid the near-traditional pre-tournament row. The most I'm hoping for from Ireland is to win their home games (tricky one vs the Welsh) and build for the future.
Alright, this isn't a sports column.
A member of my team in work is leaving so we'll have to recruit a replacement. The skills they'll need are reasonably basic but it will take a couple of months to train them up. I can't understand why my bosses are looking for someone to fill the gap with no idea where they want this person to go in the future. In my previous (very small) company we never recruited anyone without having one eye on where we wanted them go in the long run. It takes so much time and money to recruit and train someone. I don't want to have to do it again in 18 months time.
I keep thinking about moving to the States at some point. The cost of living there is so much cheaper plus la_zorra could visit her nice-but-incredibly-full-of-herself sister. I liked NYC, I have friends there and it's like a bigger, cheaper version of Dublin. At the same time I like London, if we did move it wouldn't be for quite a while.
I've started taking Japanese lessons at the SOAS. It's fun but difficult. The other people on the course seem sound and the teacher is nuts.
That's about it for news, I think.

OKC is Oklahoma City. The state of Oklahoma is not even 100 years old. I can't get my head round that.
I have a severe dislike for the UK and am planning to be in Canada by 2012.
Japenese is really difficult. My family had an exchange student stay for a week so they tried to learn a few phrases. They fucked it up royally. Excellent.
Glad you had a good birthday, hope you feel better soon.
