When I walk home from work I pass through Belgrave Square, walking by a statue of Simon Bolivar. On it is an inscription to the effect that England is the only source of freedom in the world. This led me think about the English national character and it's celebration of liberty. Why do the English profess a love of liberty yet in actuality defend structure and order first? I don't mean to sound like a pamphleteer in 1776, it's just a foreigner's observation.
On a related sidenote at least (and for me it is just an "at least") the courts have rendered "extraordinary rendition" effectively useless in the UK. I find it depressing that the counter-terrorist agencies learned nothing from Northern Ireland and forced this case in the first place.
You know when you're in work and you and you're relying on someone you like to do something and they just don't do it so you have to get pissy? That's crap. It's the very definition of selling out.
Not only is Space Cadets on Channel 4 stupid, it's not even a little bit funny and never will be. At least by watching Saskia and Maxwell you felt like you were keeping two people off the streets and away from any harm they might do to society or, God forbid, the gene pool. The producers of this tripe should be in the next Big Brother. Forever.
Speaking of TV, I'm going to be on BBC next week. Media people are, if anything, exaggerated charicatures of how they're portrayed in fiction. I was called "darling" on average twice a sentence and even the people who were in front of the camera were name-dropping despite my being clearly uninterested.
Do you ever get the feeling that things were better in the mid-90s?
