MOAR CONDESCENSION PLEASE!
Reading the feedback on the new layout really reminded me how special the community is here. Despite some hilarious dickishness, the spirit of the thread is that "hey we give you money and we care, cause shit, SG is a good thing." Amen, brothers and sisters.
I'm only one part of Voltron (his robocock) for this particular launch, but I can speak for the rest of the team in that we keep a close ear to the community as we strive to make SG a great website.
"If it ain't broke don't fix it."
I believe one of the reasons SG is still popular is because we're always evolving. How many of our internet stomping grounds have come and gone or been replaced? How crappy would facebook be if it suddenly became Facebook 2004? How shitty would Radiohead be if all their albums sounded like Pablo Honey? I remember how Kid A felt confusing at first. I knew it was good (cause smart people told me so), but I didn't get that visceral, goosebump giving sensation from it. How quickly I retreated to the warm OK Computer blanket. Now though, Radiohead could not be who they are to me without that gorgeous. suffocating, wall of sound from Everything in its Right place or the twisted urgency of Idioteque. I'm glad they didn't settle for "it works fine".
I too had problems with the oversized navigation when we first mocked it up, but it grew on me quickly. Looking at old comps, the navigation felt too small back then. I agree it could use a little "jazzing up", and that will come in time. Many aesthetic details that feel out of place can be attributed to us trying to lighten up the site a bit, bandwidth-wise. All that pretty dirt and grunge makes for a heavy, slower site. No launch is 100% perfect - it's an iterative process, You can blame me directly if I "missed a spot."
I really enjoyed reading the constructive criticism or praise (mmm mmm praise) in the thread. sopor, posh, cherry, 14thWarrior thanks for making me smile. Thanks also to those who chimed in against the new changes, we'll definitely be mindful of your opinions.

The staff here do their best, and do listen to the members a fair bit. No one is going to be happy all the time, and changes to the site are always going to get someones back up.
My only complaint today would be a lack of wonderful photos from yourself. tup tup.
...hrmm...i'm wierd....
